Series GIIIA

This series consist of 210 private notes (roq’eh) from Mirza Taqi Khan Farahani Amir Kabir mostly to Naser al-Din Shah Qajar during his premiership (1848-1851). None of the letters carry a date and the document numbers and the classification of the Sterling Memorial Library does not follow a chronological order. Naser al-Din Shah’s responses occasionally appear on the margins.

These notes cover a variety of subjects. Sometimes they are just a short note to let the shah know that Amir Kabir is not able to appear in the court or accompany shah in his horse riding; most of the letters, however, are reports on the provinces, income and expenditure, affairs of the royal harem and relatives, as well as foreign affairs, including contacts with Russian or British representatives. They also report on numerous officials, officers, court functionaries and provincial governors, whom Amir Kabir has dealt with or had taken the necessary action.

The notes illustrate the routine duties of a Qajar chief minister (sadr-e a’zam) and the process of decision making, and in particular demonstrates the central role of the shah. Several letters report on the rebellion of Hasan Khan Sardar, the governor of Khorasan (ended circa 1849). Other valuable details may also be gleaned from these notes on the organization of the Qajar army, officers, as even mutinies.
